WEIGHT ISSUES

Weight issues are as tricky for pets as for us humans.  Obesity in our pets has become a more common problem, and it has serious consequences.  Underweight animals are less common; however, this often occurs with much older pets.

Why should I worry about my pet's weight?
A number of reasons exist.  There is significant evidence that obese animals do not live as long as pets at healthy weights.  Excess weight can also lead to diabetes, skeletal problems, and it is hard on many organs such as the heart.  Being underweight is a problem as well.  Underweight animals may be severely malneurished which can cause organ failure and a shortened lifespan.  Older pets often have a diminished ability to absorb nutrients, and weight loss can be seen as a result.

What can cause my pet's weight problem?
Most pet food products list the quantity of food to feed your pet depending upon its healthy weight.  These quantities are usually a bit more than the pet actually requires to maintain a healthy weight.  Pet foods vary tremendously in quality, and many can contain unneccesary calories and fillers.  It is important to feed your pet a "quality" pet food, at an appropriate portion.  Additional reasons for weight gain can include physiological problems with their metabolism and endocrine system, certain diseases, or they may not be getting enough exercise to burn off the calories they are ingesting.  Problems with weight loss may be caused by internal parasites, diseases, absorption problems, problems with the type of food being fed, or age-related issues.  If your pet is struggling with a weight issue, it is important to visit your veterinarian to determine the cause and find a treatment.

What general advice can you give to maintain a healthy weight?
Food and exercise are the key.  Make sure you are feeding an appropriate amount of a quality food, and make sure your pet is getting adequate exercise every day.  Exercise is a wonderful remedy to many problems, including boredom.  Our pets can develop serious mental issues when they lack exercise, so it is important to keep them mentally stimulated and to burn off some calories every day!
New "food toys" are on the market and they are a good way to mentally stimulate your pet, while making them work for their food.  These are generally a hard rubber or plastic toy into which you can insert their dog food.  The dog has to play with the toy in order to get the food out.
Toys in general are a good way to help your dog stay active, but Do NOT use laser pointers for your dog! Though they are fine and very entertaining for cats they can cause serious issues with your dog!
Start out right from the start.  Keep your puppies and kittens from becoming "chubby".  Once they put on the weight, it is much harder to remove it and keep them slim.
